September 1,2012–The College of Computer Studies and Engineering fended-off Radiologic Technology department with a 2-0 set score to win the Men’s Sepak Championship duel at the college gymnasium.

CCSE squad, headed by team captain Alvin Fernandez engineered a 21-17 set score to dominate the first set. The team’s main offensive player, Jumel Vallejos hit the last play to finish the game at the second set with a 21-15 advantage. The Radiologic Technology team, led by Ryan Jucutan, was unable to neutralize the opponent’s offense on the second cut and lost the Championship thriller.

Meanwhile, the College of Management and Accountancy notched the third place for this year’s contest. Also, the defending Champion, College of Nursing, became the underdog team for this year’s league. CCSE also defeated RT on their first face-off at game 6 of the elimination period.

“Nagpapasalamat ako sa Panginoon dahil nanalo kami, kahit na pagod ang mga players ko kasi nga acquaintace party nila kahapon,” said Randulf Elvin Andrada,  coach of CCSE. “Ayos din ang sportmanship ng ibang team at players,” he added.

The College of Arts and Sciences pawned CON on Game 1 of the eleminations. Only five teams joined the said competition for this year.

“Masaya ako siyempre. It’s our turn na mag-champion,” said CCSE’s A. Fernandez when asked about winning the championship game.

CON took the first set with a three-point advantage over the challenging team. Recovering from the 25-22 score, CCSE easily owned the next two sets, leading the game with twice the opponent’s score, clinching 25-12 and 25-14 respectively.

The CON struggled against the already dominating squad on a neck and neck exchange of rallies at the end of the fourth set, which concluded to a 26-24 advantage for the former.

It was a magnificent display of spikes and blocks during the tie breaking round as the two teams tried to dominate one another to decide this year’s champions.

The game concluded with CCSE grabbing the title from CON, adding to the golds and glitters of the already most decorated department.

“They were inspired to do their best with the help of their own team members. Nagkaroon ng coordination at team work among the players kaya ganun naging resulta,” says Engr. Bernardo F. Vallo, coach of the CCSE

“Nahirapan  ang CCSE sa CON kasi magaling sila, but they practiced. Nagkaroon sila ng teamwork at  naging responsible sila sa mga dapat nilang gawin para sa game,” says CCSE’s playing coach.

Youth JaM was celebrated for the first time in Lorma Colleges. “JaM does not however refer to teen parties. Instead, it is Youth: Jesus and Me,” clarified Pastor Brennus Paragas, Lorma chaplain.

Twenty one sections performed on stage, delivering creative skits, musical and numbers. Of these, five groups were recognized for their memorable performances and were given financial incentives.

BS Computer Engineering I – I wowed the house with their singing choral version of the song “At the Cross.” Meanwhile, BS Pharmacy I-1 who delivered an impromptu singing choral and majestic black theater interpretation of the song “Still” impressed the spectators.

BMLS I-1 fascinated the onlookers with their striking choral and dance presentation of the song “One”. RadTech I-1 fascinated the viewers with their marvelous choral version of the song “Who am I?”

A special award for the department that has the most number of students who finished the program was given to the Radiologic I –I department.

The “Miracle” musical play of the BSN I – I touched the hearts of the observers.

“Naiyak talaga ako sa play ng BSN I – I, medyo nakakarelate din kasi ako na kahit na napakabigat ng mga problema ko, I still believe na may reason at plano si God kaya niya binigay ang mga pagsubok na to sakin,” says Oreus Cruz of BS Pharma I – I.

Though the program ended late, a considerable number of students still stayed and finished it.

The first ever Youth JaM was organized by the United Christian Church.

The reigning champs’ Lhesley Legaspina led his team to victory delivering a winning spike on the fourth set with a 25-17 score.

From the start to its end, both teams made the crowd roar with excitement on their neck-to-neck rallies. After several exchange of dazzling attacks, CCSE dominated the first set of the match with a 25-19 blast.

Being clobbered on the first chapter, CON heated up and bounced back on the second set clinching a 26-24 advantage.

The defending champs regained their composure on the third set and mercilessly routed the opponent at 25-8 set score.

The challenger fought hard to force a set 5 showdown but CCSE rallies subdued their net foe on the fourth cut and claimed the title.

“They have to defend their crown. One of the strategies was we conducted a sports fest in our own department and from that we chose the best players. Teamwork din ang kailangan at walang sisihan sa huli,” says Engr. Bernardo F. Vallo, coach of CCSE.

“The better team won. I have no hard feelings at all. It’s good because everyone is friendly and kind,” says Justin Mendoza of CON.

After kneeling to CCSE on the eliminations, CON ousted the Radiologic Technology department to claim the championship ticket with CCSE waiting on the Finals.

“Maganda yung game. Lahat ng players namin nagcooperate tapos lahat ng sinasabe ko sinusunod naman nila. Mahalaga din yung teamwork at practice namin,” CCSE’s team captain, Joerey Medina added.

The Commission on Higher Education, in partnership with Community Health Education Emergency Rescue Services (CHEERS) decided to work in partnership in strengthening information dissemination about disaster preparedness to students across the Philippines.

The discussion was led by Von Ryan Rodrigo and Ryan Wilson Abedela, both registered nurses and trained rescuers.

Participants were given an overview about the destructive effects of nature, a recap of the typhoons that had left a number of Filipinos homeless with a considerable rise in death rates (Ondoy, Sendong and Ramil), and brief education on basic life support and preparedness.

The lecturers encouraged the use of Go Bag, a survival kit that contains flashlight, whistle, radio, emergency medicines, food, clothes and other life-saving materials and equipment. The use of Automated External Defibrillator or AED was also emphasized. This device can check the heart’s rhythm and send electric shock in victims having sudden “cardiac arrests.”

Meanwhile, alternative materials were also discussed, which includes the use of sanitary napkins as alternatives for gauzes. This is because of their absorbent quality and handy size. Lectures on first aid were also conducted.

“Active interaction with the students is actually not enough if they will not undergo proper and thorough training. Kumbaga, patikim lang ito sa mga gagawin sa GDPP,” says Abedela.

“Ang mga estudyante ang susunod na mga lider. Kayo ang susunod sa amin,” adds Rodrigo.

CHEERS is the only agency accredited by CHED to conduct such trainings and reach out to students from various provinces and municipalities.

The change was implemented because the old name causes confusion due to its similarity to another school. In addition, both schools offer the same courses.

The approval of the top management about changing LCSTI to LCSDI is currently on the process and there has no definite date yet on when it will be official. According to Mr. Catalino B. Abellera, LCSDI assistant Dean, the use of the new name of their department has been approved by Dean Hercules Cepriaso. Nonetheless, the new name will be introduced to the students so that even before the top management will approve the request, the students will already get accustomed to it.

The department also plans about offering more courses, like arts and electronics to further increase their population. This will also give a unique identity to the department in order to avoid getting mistaken for other schools.

A new logo will also be created to represent the newly named department. A contest to create the new logo for the department will be conducted during the LCSDI week.

“I think mas maganda yun. It is better na mapalitan para di kami ma-associate sa other schools,” said Asst. Dean Abellera.

The “Chicken Cacciatore” is a gourmet dish bursting with flavor and aroma. In addition, Chef Loida also taught the students how to prepare an egg salad as a side dish and banana flambé as dessert.

During her cooking demonstrations, the veteran chef emphasized that students do not need expensive ingredients in order to serve great dishes. She cited few cheap alternatives that can be used, such as the use of the native Basi (fermented sugar cane) instead of red wine.

In between the demonstrations, the students were given the chance to ask questions and tips that can help propel their future careers.

“They were very good and enthusiastic, even though they were shy. It is awesome to see that they simply wanted to learn, that is why I liked them so much,” remarks Chef Loida.

The chef was amused with the young managers and described them to have the “potential in the food service and in the culinary arts”. She emphasized however that they should learn, read and train more.

“The cooking lessons are very valuable to me. Dagdag experience siya sa amin tapos na-enhance siyempre yung skills ko sa cooking,” claims Aihie Ordoña.

“I will still be here in 2 weeks so I expect them to improved more. I toured the facilities and it is so awesome that they have these in the Philippines. They are very accommodating,” adds Chef Loida.

The second part of her cooking demonstration will be held on September 19 where the students will be presented with more recipes for making pastries and additional cooking techniques.

August 25, 2012 – Heavily favored to win this year’s credence competition, the College of Medical Laboratory Science (CMLS) delivered another mind-blowing performance with their Warrior motif during the school Intramurals at the college gymnasium.

Sporting swords, shields and eye-catching purple and yellow costumes aptly symbolizing their college, the Askies blazed the dance floor with complex routines and quick formation changes. Matched with strong facial expressions, the pep squad made the agitated crowd grew even more excited with each tumble and turn of cheerleader John Maverick Elizalde.

The competition was concluded with the CMLS Askies winning first place while the College of Nursing (CON) Elites and the College of Management and Accountancy Blacksmiths garnered second and third places respectively.

Meanwhile, the College of Computer Studies and Engineering reaped the most number of special awards. The all-male squad was awarded Most Entertaining for the sixth consecutive time and Most Punctual, while IT student Hans Nisperos was Best Mascot.

College of Pharmacy Elixirs was awarded Best Preliminary Yell, and Adria Catubig of CON was Best Cheerleader.

“People think that we are more prepared, but we are actually not,” claimed MLS cheerleader Elizalde who was among the most ecstatic with the results of the competition.

“I was surprised because the last time I saw them practicing, their routine was not perfect. They changed their routine last Monday. I am proud of them. Dapat ipakita din nila ung same level of energy and enthusiasm in their academics,” said CMLS Dean Arlene Lumbang.
